The motion, while not legally binding, is a step towards the possible dismissal of Gali Baharav-Miara

The Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unanimously approved a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. The decision, made on Sunday, paves the way towards a possible dismissal of the prosecutor, although the motion itself is not legally binding for the impeachment process.

In a letter sent to the government before the meeting, Baharav-Miara called the motion ‘legally irrelevant’ and stressed that it will not affect the government’s attempt to remove her from office. According to Israeli law, the removal of the attorney general requires the convening of a five-member public committee, responsible for both appointment and dismissal.

Although the motion has no direct legal weight, it is a clear signal of the Netanyahu government’s intention to move towards the dismissal of Baharav-Miara, raising further political tensions in Israel.
