The 80-year-old former German chancellor suffers from severe symptoms of fatigue and cognitive difficulties

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has been hospitalised due to severe burnout. Dpa released the news, citing a letter from the attending physician who describes Schroeder’s symptoms as those of a ‘severe burnout syndrome’, with profound fatigue and a severe lack of energy.

Schroeder, who ruled Germany from 1998 to 2005 as leader of the Social Democratic Party, is also facing concentration difficulties, memory problems and sleep disorders. His doctor has deemed it necessary to hospitalise him to monitor his condition.

In recent months, the former chancellor has been at the centre of criticism due to his close ties with Russia, in particular for his role in certain Russian companies and his failure to explicitly condemn Vladimir Putin’s actions in the war in Ukraine, a stance that has sparked international controversy.
