A strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook southwest Japan at 9.19pm local time, triggering a tsunami alert for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. This was reported by the Kyodo news agency.
Initially, the Japan Meteorological Agency had reported a magnitude of 6.4, later corrected to 6.9. The intensity of the earthquake, according to surveys, reached a level below 5 in Miyazaki Prefecture on a scale up to 7.
According to initial reports in the local media, the quake particularly affected the Kyushu region, one of Japan’s main islands. At the moment, no damage or casualties have been reported, but the authorities are monitoring the situation pending further developments related to the tsunami risk.
