Rob Reiner murder in Los Angeles: the famed director and his wife killed at home. Their son has been arrested

Hollywood has been left reeling by the Rob Reiner murder, after the legendary American film director and producer and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles. Reiner was 78, while Singer was 68. According to US media reports, their 32-year-old son Nick has been arrested and placed in custody, with bail set at 4 million dollars.

Police sources say the suspect is currently being held by the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators have confirmed that both victims suffered fatal stab wounds, suggesting they were killed with a bladed weapon inside their own home. No signs of forced entry were found at the property.

Bodies discovered in the Brentwood villa

In an initial statement, the Los Angeles Police Department said that “the bodies of an adult man and woman were discovered inside the residence of Rob Reiner and his wife”. Emergency services were called to the address at around 3.30pm local time on Sunday 14 December following a request for medical assistance.

Detectives from the homicide and robbery units immediately sealed off the area and began forensic examinations. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspected weapon has been recovered, and have released few details about the exact sequence of events behind the Rob Reiner murder.

Reports of a violent family dispute

Entertainment website TMZ has reported that the couple were killed during a violent domestic confrontation, sustaining deep knife wounds to the throat. Sources close to the investigation claim that one of the couple’s daughters discovered the bodies and alerted the authorities, reportedly pointing to a family member as a potential suspect and describing him as dangerous.

Shock and tributes from Hollywood

Friends and long-time collaborators were seen gathering outside the Brentwood property in the hours following the discovery, including actors Billy Crystal and Larry David. Messages of condolence have also been shared publicly by author Stephen King and actor Ben Stiller.

Rob Reiner, best known for films such as When Harry Met Sally… and Misery, had been married to Michele Singer since 1989. Beyond his career in cinema, the couple were widely respected for their philanthropic work and advocacy for children’s welfare and civil rights.

A family spokesperson asked for privacy, saying they were “devastated by this sudden and tragic loss”. Tracy Reiner, the director’s adopted daughter, told NBC News: “I come from the most beautiful family in the world. I am in shock and struggling to find words.”

Strained relations and a recent public argument

Further details are emerging about tensions within the family. According to TMZ, Rob Reiner and his son Nick had a heated argument during a recent Christmas party hosted by television presenter Conan O’Brien, after which Reiner and his wife reportedly left the event early.

In recent months, Singer had allegedly confided to friends that she and her husband were emotionally exhausted due to their son’s mental health struggles and alleged substance abuse issues. Investigators are now assessing these elements as part of the wider inquiry into the Rob Reiner murder.
