Netanyahu orders the resumption of military operations against Hamas with Operation ‘Strength and Sword’ after the failure of ceasefire negotiations. The situation in the Gaza Strip worsens, with a death toll of hundreds, most of them women and children. The reaction of Hamas and the US position

Israel resumed air strikes against the Gaza Strip overnight, triggering Operation ‘Strength and Sword’ on the orders of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who officially declared the resumption of hostilities against Hamas. The current ceasefire was broken after the failure of negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages held by the organisation. The decision triggered an escalation of violence, with intensified shelling and growing concern for the safety of civilians.

According to Palestinian medical sources quoted by Al-Jazeera, the death toll has already exceeded 350 people, mostly women and children, with hundreds injured. The Israeli raids also targeted Hamas leaders, including Mahmoud abu Watfa and Issam al Daalis, key figures in the organisation. Some Hamas members, including Bahjat Abu Sultan, head of internal security, were eliminated in the recent attacks.

The Israeli army (IDF) ordered the evacuation of several areas of the Gaza Strip, calling on civilians to immediately leave combat zones such as Beit Hanoun, Khirbet Khuza’a and Abasan al-Kabira, to seek refuge in less exposed areas. Israeli forces spokesman Avichay Adraee stated on X that the military campaign aims to ‘neutralise terrorist organisations and remove the threat posed by Hamas’.

Netanyahu stressed that the decision to resume the war was made after Hamas rejected all proposals for the release of hostages, including attempts brokered by US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff. ‘Israel will continue to fight until all goals are achieved,’ Netanyahu said, including the return of the hostages and the destruction of Hamas infrastructure.

On the other hand, Hamas accused Israel of sabotaging the ceasefire agreement and condemned the resumption of military operations, saying Netanyahu had ‘condemned to death’ the hostages held in the Gaza Strip. The movement called for intervention by the international community to stop the escalation and hold Israel accountable for violating the agreements.

Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that Israel had consulted the Trump administration before launching the new raids. Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, stated that ‘Hamas could have released the hostages to extend the ceasefire, but chose to refuse and wage war’. Karoline Leavitt, President Trump’s spokeswoman, reiterated the US determination to support Israel against terrorist threats.

In an already highly inflamed context, the Israeli military operation risks further amplifying international tensions, while the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate. The international community is watching the evolution of the crisis with apprehension as the region teeters on the brink of a new and devastating war.
