Ukraine: Massive attacks on Russian targets, Lavrov opens talks on security guarantees
Kiev claims the largest-ever operation on Russian territory, while Lavrov says Moscow is willing to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but only in the context of a broader agreement
Ukraine claimed an unprecedented wave of attacks on Russian military facilities, calling it ‘the most massive’ since the beginning of the conflict. The targets hit are between 200 and 1,100 kilometres inside Russia and include chemical plants, refineries and ammunition depots at the Engels airbase, according to a source in the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). Affected regions include Saratov, Voronezh, Orel and Tatarstan.
The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that Ukrainian forces fired western missiles at Russian territory overnight, claiming to have shot down six US Atacms rockets and six British Storm Shadow cruise missiles, as well as two Storm Shadow missiles in the Black Sea.
Meanwhile, Moscow announced the recapture of two villages in the Donetsk region, Neskuchne and Terny, which had been snatched at the beginning of the conflict by Ukrainian forces.
In a broader context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia is willing to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but only as part of broader agreements that include the elimination of threats to Russia’s western borders. Lavrov also commented positively on signals from US President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed his intention to end the conflict in Ukraine, while maintaining reservations about Washington’s military support for Kiev.
