A federal judge rejects prosecutors’ request for capital punishment and allows seized evidence to be used at trial

Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was killed in December 2024. The decision was issued by a federal judge, who denied prosecutors’ request to seek capital punishment, according to CNN.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett ruled that the offense attributed to Mangione does not meet the legal definition of a “crime of violence,” a prerequisite under federal law to pursue the death penalty. As a result, Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty despite the severity of the charges.

In a separate ruling, Judge Garnett also allowed prosecutors to introduce evidence seized from Mangione’s backpack at the time of his arrest. Investigators recovered a handgun, a loaded magazine, and a red notebook, items they argue directly link the defendant to the killing of Thompson.

Defense attorneys had sought to exclude the material, claiming the search was unlawful because it was conducted without a warrant and in the absence of any immediate threat that would justify an exception. The court rejected that argument, determining that the seizure was legally permissible and that the evidence can be used during the trial.

The rulings significantly shape the course of the case, confirming that Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty while strengthening the prosecution’s ability to present physical evidence connecting him to the crime.
