With Donald Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine, Kiev is facing a new reality. According to Ukrainian MP Fedir Venislavsky, Ukraine can hold out for six months without US support, but the continuation of the war will become much more difficult without new arms supplies

Donald Trump has decided to stop military aid to Ukraine, putting Kiev in a delicate position after three years of war. The US president is calling for a ceasefire, a condition also linked to the agreement on rare earths, mineral resources crucial to the global economy. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, is now under pressure to accept the deal proposed by Washington.

Fedir Venislavsky, Ukrainian MP, stated that Ukraine could survive for six months without US aid, but stressed the need to adapt military strategies and compensate for the resources previously provided by the US. Meanwhile, the Defence Committee of the Kiev Parliament held a closed-door meeting to address the possibility of a permanent halt to US military aid.

The Ukrainian military, especially those on the frontline, value US support as crucial for defence and troop morale. Serhii Filimonov, commander of the 108th mechanised battalion, emphasised the importance of European support, saying that Europe’s allies will need to step up their help beyond simple messages of support on social media.

Ukraine said it was ready to sign the rare earths agreement, which could revive US military support. Denys Shmyhal, Ukrainian Prime Minister, reiterated the importance of obtaining security guarantees from both the US and the EU, stressing that these guarantees are crucial not only for Kiev but also for the whole of Europe.
