Released from Israel Hamdan Ballal, co-director of ‘No Other Land’: denounces mistreatment
The Oscar-winning co-director has been released and is on his way home after being abused in detention by the Israeli army
Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, has been released and is ‘returning to his home to reunite with his family’, his lawyer reported. Ballal recounted that he was “handcuffed, blindfolded and beaten all night at a military base” of the Israeli army during his detention.
The director’s arrest had sparked international outrage, with several voices from the world of cinema and human rights calling for his release. Ballal, known for his commitment to telling the stories of oppressed peoples, had contributed to the making of No Other Land, a documentary that explores the drama of refugees in the Middle East, bringing to light issues of profound topicality and sensitivity.
At the moment, no further details have been given about the charges that led to his detention or his current state of health, but his lawyer has stated that legal action will be taken to denounce the mistreatment he suffered.
