Hamas after months confirms Death of Muhammad Deif
An Elusive Figure Between Past and Present Killed by Israeli IDF
Hamas spokesman Abu Obaida recently confirmed, via a video statement, the death of Muhammad Deif. Deif, once the elusive commander of the group’s military wing, was killed during an Israeli attack in the summer of 2024. Hamas had previously denied his death in the 13 July attack.
Target of Repeated Attacks
In the past, Israel had repeatedly targeted Deif, believing on some occasions that it had eliminated him. However, these attacks had only resulted in severe injuries for Deif, leaving him paralysed but not defeated.
The Decisive Attack
On 13 July 2024, Israel conducted an airstrike on a Hamas compound in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip. The attack, which targeted Deif and the head of Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade, Rafa’a Salameh, resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. The IDF confirmed Salameh’s death the following day and Deif’s on 1 August.
Confirmation Delayed
According to a November report, Hamas was not immediately able to confirm Deif’s death due to communication problems with him and, subsequently, due to the severely disfigured state of his remains.
