Israel approves death penalty for terrorists targeting Palestinians
Knesset passes law after lengthy debate; Palestinian Authority calls it a “dangerous escalation”
Israel approves death penalty for terrorists targeting Palestinians, after the Knesset passed the measure in its second and third readings following nearly twelve hours of debate. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted in favor. The final tally was 62 votes in support, 48 against, with one abstention.
The law introduces capital punishment by hanging for West Bank residents convicted of terrorism by military courts. In practice, the measure applies only to Palestinians, as it explicitly excludes Israeli citizens and residents, who are tried in civilian courts, as noted by The Times of Israel.
A separate provision allows courts to impose the death penalty on any individual, including Israeli citizens, but only in cases where a person intentionally causes death with the aim of denying the existence of the State of Israel. According to the text, this definition effectively excludes Israeli perpetrators of terrorism.
Following the approval, the Palestinian Authority condemned the law, calling it a “dangerous escalation.” In a post on X, its Foreign Ministry stated that “Israel has no sovereignty over Palestinian land,” adding that the legislation “once again reveals the nature of the Israeli colonial system, which seeks to legitimize extrajudicial killings under legal cover.”
