Denmark wants to buy California in response to Trump’s Greenland idea
More than 200,000 Danes sign ironic petition to buy California after Trump’s statements on Greenland
After Donald Trump’s statements about buying Greenland, over 200,000 Danes responded by signing an ironic proposal: buy California. With a provocative petition, Danish citizens set out to ‘buy’ the American state, dreaming of turning it into a kind of ‘New Denmark’ under the West Coast sun.
‘Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees and roller skates.‘’ reads the petition, which jokes about the opportunity to realise this dream. ‘Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!’ continue the authors, who also spare no jokes on political topics.
The idea of buying California comes in the context of Trump’s criticism of the state that faces the Pacific waters, calling it ‘the most ruined state in the Union’ and having clashed with its leaders. The Danes, on the other hand, see themselves as the ‘saviours’ of California, bringing with them not only the culture of design, but also ‘hygge’ and smørrebrød, the typical Danish dishes.
Supporters of the petition also include personalities such as Lars Ulrich of Metallica and Viggo Mortensen, who join the ironic campaign, with the goal of collecting $1 trillion and 500,000 signatures.
A joking but edgy response to Trump’s idea of buying up Greenland, with a dash of Danish humour to boot.
