Trump removes Bondi, taps former personal lawyer Blanche as interim AG
The president announces the leadership change at the Justice Department, appointing his former personal lawyer as acting attorney general
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, April 2, confirmed the removal of Pam Bondi as attorney general and announced that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will serve as interim head of the Justice Department.
The decision marks a sudden leadership change at the top of the department, with Trump selecting Blanche—his former personal attorney—to assume the role on a temporary basis.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Bondi’s tenure, calling her “a great American patriot and a loyal friend” who had served with dedication over the past year. He credited her with overseeing a broad crackdown on crime across the country, stating that homicide rates had fallen to their lowest levels since 1900 during her time in office.
Trump also said Bondi will move to a new position in the private sector, describing it as “very important and much needed,” with further details to be announced at a later date.
Blanche, currently serving as deputy attorney general, was described by the president as a “highly talented and respected” legal figure. His appointment as interim attorney general takes immediate effect.
