Hegseth asks Army Chief Randy George to resign
Defense secretary moves to replace the Army’s top general with a figure aligned with Trump’s military vision
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to resign and retire immediately, according to CBS News, which cited sources familiar with the decision.
The request signals a shift in military leadership, with one source indicating that Hegseth intends to install a successor capable of carrying out the vision for the Army shared by both the defense secretary and President Donald Trump.
A senior Defense Department official told CBS News: “We are grateful for his service, but it was time for new leadership at the top of the Army.”
George, a career infantry officer and a graduate of West Point, has served for decades, including deployments during the Gulf War and in more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He previously held the role of senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022, during the Biden administration.
The Army chief of staff position typically carries a four-year term. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, which would have placed the end of his tenure in 2027.
