Trump seeks $152M to reopen Alcatraz prison
Proposal for fiscal 2027 would fund first year of operations as a maximum-security facility; separate order shuts migrant site in Florida
More than $150 million to bring Alcatraz back into operation. President Donald Trump has asked Congress to allocate $152 million to cover the first year of reopening the former prison as a maximum-security facility, according to CNN.
The request is included in the White House budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 released in recent hours. The funding would be part of a broader $1.7 billion package earmarked for the federal prison system, aimed at improving salaries and working conditions for staff.
Trump has long signaled his intention to reactivate Alcatraz, which closed more than 60 years ago and now operates as a major tourist destination. The site draws about 1.2 million visitors annually, according to the U.S. network.
Separately, on August 22, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams of the Southern District of Florida ordered the closure of “Alligator Alcatraz,” a detention facility set up in June by the Trump administration. The site held around 700 migrants and had drawn criticism over what opponents described as severe conditions.
