The memory of Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, leader of economic reforms and foreign policy. The tribute of Modi and Gandhi

Manmohan Singh, former finance minister and premier of India, has died at the age of 92, a few days after being admitted to hospital for an illness. The death occurred yesterday evening. Singh, who served as premier from 2004 to 2014, is remembered for leading the economic reforms that transformed India into a world economic power.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled on X, remembering Singh as a ‘respected economist’ and praising his vision for improving people’s lives. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called Singh ‘a mentor and guide’.

Born in a small village in Punjab, Singh studied at Cambridge and Oxford, becoming the first Sikh premier in Indian history. In 1991, as finance minister, he initiated the process of opening India to global markets. In 2008, he signed a historic agreement with the United States on civil nuclear power, and supported the peace process with Pakistan and China.

In his second term, Singh’s government faced credibility crises, accusations of corruption and difficulties in dealing with inflation, but his impact on Indian economic policy was profound and lasting.
