US President Donald Trump has announced that he will talk to Vladimir Putin tomorrow about ending the war between Ukraine and Russia, with optimism for a possible agreement within the next week

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow about the possibility of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. ‘We’re doing pretty well, I think, with Russia. We’ll see if we have anything to announce, maybe by Tuesday,’ Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, returning to the White House after a weekend at Mar-a-Lago.

Over the weekend, Trump said that significant progress had been made in negotiations, and stressed that he wanted to see if it was possible to bring this war to a conclusion. ‘Maybe we will, maybe we won’t, but I think we have a very good chance,’ he added, suggesting that many of the key issues have already been discussed, including the territories and power plants involved in the conflict. Some of these assets, according to Trump, ‘are very different than they were before the war’.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for Russia, said that the distance between the two sides has narrowed, and expressed optimism about an ‘excellent and positive conversation’ between Trump and Putin. Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow over the past few days and participated in a point-of-view with Trump over the weekend at Mar-a-Lago.

At the same time, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas expressed doubts about Russia’s real peace intentions, pointing out that Moscow’s conditions for a ceasefire include the ultimate goals of the war. On the other hand, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Kestutis Budrys, reiterated the importance of lasting military support for Ukraine, with a pledge of at least EUR 40 billion from EU countries for this year, considered crucial for future security guarantees.
