Hamas exponent Sami Abu Zuhri calls for struggle against the US president’s plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza. Tension also grows in Israel, where Netanyahu considers a change in the leadership of the Shin Bet
Hamas exponent Sami Abu Zuhri issued a call for armed resistance in response to US President Donald Trump’s proposed plan to relocate two million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. In a note quoted by the Guardian, Zuhri stated that ‘anyone who can take up arms, anywhere in the world, must act’, and urged the use of ‘explosives, bullets, knives or stones’ to oppose this plan, which he said combines ‘massacres and famine’.
Last month, Trump had presented a controversial plan for Gaza, which envisaged relocating the entire population and rebuilding the enclave into a resort on the Mediterranean. After much criticism, the president made it clear that no Palestinians would be forced to leave the area by force, denying any accusations of ethnic cleansing.
Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. According to the local health ministry, more than a thousand Palestinians have been killed since 18 March, when the Israeli military operation resumed. The Israeli army confirmed the destruction of a Hamas underground tunnel and the elimination of over 50 militants. In preparation for a new military operation, residents of several areas in the south of the Strip were asked to evacuate.
On the political front, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was indirectly involved in the ‘Qatargate’ investigation, with the arrest of his two top aides, Yonatan Urich and Eli Feldstein. The police confirmed that the two were arrested for alleged illicit connections with Qatar. Netanyahu may be summoned to testify in the coming days as he ponders the appointment of the new head of the Shin Bet, after the choice of Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit was called into question for his participation in protests against justice reform.
In Yemen, the Houthis report that around 60 people have been killed in raids attributed to the US in the last two weeks, while the military operation in the country continues, with Centcom confirming its objective of restoring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
