A state funeral will be held on 9 January for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. President Biden calls on the American people to pay their respects

9 January will be a day of national mourning in the United States in honour of former President Jimmy Carter, who died yesterday at the age of 100. This was announced by the White House, confirming that a state funeral will be held on the same day in Washington. President Joe Biden called on the entire nation to join in paying tribute to one of the most respected leaders in American history.

Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia. Born in 1924, Carter was the oldest living president of the United States, breaking the previous record held by George H.W. Bush, who died at the age of 94 in 2019. His presidential term was marked by dramatic events such as the hostage crisis in the US embassy in Tehran and the failure of the military rescue operation. After his electoral defeat against Ronald Reagan in 1980, Carter dedicated his life to numerous humanitarian causes through the Carter Foundation, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter had attended the funeral of his wife Rosalynn, who died on 19 November 2023, in one of his rare public appearances, already suffering from a terminal illness and undergoing palliative treatment. The couple had been a symbol of unity and dedication in public and private life. Rosalynn, who died at the age of 96, had spent the last months of her life battling dementia.

On 1 October, Carter had celebrated her 100th birthday, continuing to hold the record for longevity among American presidents. His political and humanitarian legacy, enriched by decades of commitment to peace and human rights, will remain an example for future generations.
