Macron criticizes U.S. approach to global alliances at Paris conference
The French president warns against new forms of colonialism and urges strategic autonomy for Europe
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Macron criticizes U.S. approach to global alliances as the United States increasingly moves away from its partners and seeks to act outside international norms. Speaking at the annual conference of ambassadors in Paris, he argued that there is “a real effort to divide the world” among major powers, reflecting a shift toward unilateralism and strategic competition.
Macron described the rise of what he called “neo-colonial aggression” in international relations, noting that traditional multilateral institutions are functioning less effectively. “We are evolving into a world dominated by great powers, each tempted to carve out its own sphere of influence,” he said, emphasizing the risks associated with such divisions.
The president also stressed that Europe must reject both new forms of colonialism and any notion of subservience. “We refuse the new colonialism and the new imperialism, but we also reject vassalage and defeatism,” Macron stated. He highlighted the progress France and Europe have achieved toward greater strategic autonomy, reducing reliance on both the United States and China.
Finally, Macron called for renewed investment in the United Nations, underscoring that it would be “absurd not to do so” given the current challenges in global governance and the need to maintain a rules-based international system.
