King Charles III revokes Prince Andrew’s titles

King Charles III revokes Prince Andrew’s titles after the Epstein scandal

King Charles III’s decision to revoke Prince Andrew’s titles represents a turning point in the history of the British monarchy. Following new allegations linked to the Epstein case, the sovereign has chosen to strip his younger brother of all royal titles, effectively relegating him to a life away from public engagements.

This is the first time in over a century that a member of the royal family has been subjected to such a measure. Buckingham Palace has announced that Andrew will henceforth be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, losing the right to be called “Prince”.

Epstein and the allegations that have engulfed Andrew

King Charles III’s decision to strip Prince Andrew of his titles came after the publication of the memoirs of Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s main accusers. In the book, the woman — who died by suicide in April — reiterated in disturbing detail that she had been forced to have sex with Andrew when she was a minor.

Ghostwriter Amy Wallace called the sovereign’s move “a historic development”, praising the king’s courage in recognising the seriousness of the allegations. During a BBC live broadcast, the news sparked spontaneous applause from the audience and widespread approval among British politicians.

Giuffre’s brother, Sky Roberts, also commented on King Charles III’s decision to revoke Prince Andrew’s titles, calling it a step in the right direction but insufficient: “Andrew must end up behind bars,” he told the BBC.

The anti-monarchist group Republic has called for private legal action to be taken against the former prince, while the London police, after a review of the case in 2021, confirmed that they had found no evidence to proceed.

Andrew, now 65, continues to deny all charges, but in 2022 he paid millions of dollars to Giuffre to settle the civil case in the United States.

A sign of rigour from Buckingham Palace

With King Charles III’s decision to revoke Prince Andrew’s titles, the sovereign intends to reaffirm the credibility and ethics of the monarchy. Andrew will have to leave the Royal Lodge in Windsor and move to Sandringham, to a private residence financed by the king.

While remaining eighth in line to the throne, Andrew is now excluded from all official duties. Charles’ decision has been welcomed as an act of responsibility, aimed at protecting the image of the monarchy in the face of the most serious scandal in decades.
