From Monday, the former vice president will no longer be protected: an order signed by Biden has been revoked.

From 1 September, Kamala Harris will no longer have Secret Service protection. President Donald Trump revoked the protection with an official document dated Thursday and addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The order directs the termination of “any previously authorised security arrangements” for the former vice president, with the exception of protections required by law.

The regulatory framework

In the United States, former presidents retain Secret Service protection for life, while former vice presidents are guaranteed protection for six months after leaving office. Harris had benefited from a special extension granted by Joe Biden shortly before leaving the White House, a provision that remained confidential until today and has now been cancelled by Trump.

Reactions

No comments have been received from the White House. Kamala Harris’s staff thanked the Secret Service for its ‘professionalism, dedication and tireless commitment’. Meanwhile, the former vice-president is preparing for a tour of the United States to promote her book 107 Days, due out on 23 September.

Political implications

The revocation comes amid a tense political climate in Washington, with Trump’s return to the White House and the removal of several measures sought by the previous administration. The decision to terminate Harris’s extraordinary protection risks fuelling the debate on the security of institutional figures once they leave office.
