Rumours speak of an agreement being finalised for the management of the Strip, with the involvement of the Arab League and the United States
In recent months, the name of Samir Halilah, a Palestinian businessman, has emerged as a possible candidate for governor of the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the current conflict. According to the Israeli website Ynet, work is underway behind the scenes to find a solution that can be accepted by all parties involved, including Israel, the United States and Hamas.
In an interview with the Palestinian news agency Ma’an, which is close to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Halilah confirmed that his candidacy had been discussed for some time within the Palestinian leadership and had received preliminary approval from Hamas. The plan, which is still being finalised, provides for the appointment of a governor to manage civil affairs, security and reconstruction, under the supervision of an Arab League committee composed of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, the PNA and Qatar.
According to Ma’an, the agreement under discussion also includes the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Strip, with the entry of Arab forces under American supervision to ensure stability.
Samir Halilah, former Secretary General of Ahmed Qurei’s Palestinian government in 2005-2006 and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestine Securities Exchange until March 2024, is a well-known figure in Palestinian political and economic circles.
At present, however, the proposal remains one of many options on the table, and there has been no official confirmation from Israel, Hamas or the PNA. The situation in Gaza remains critical, with serious humanitarian and military emergencies ongoing, and any future developments still appear uncertain.
