Ceasefire between Israel and Syria: agreement reached at 5 p.m.

After days of attacks in the Syrian province of Sweida, the parties have agreed to cease hostilities. Announcement by US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack

The ceasefire between Israel and Syria officially came into effect today, Sunday 20 July, at 5 p.m. local time (4 p.m. in Italy). This was announced by the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, who emphasised the end of Israeli military operations against Syrian targets, particularly in the southern province of Sweida, which is predominantly inhabited by Druze communities.

‘The escalation of hostilities can only be contained by an agreement to end the violence, protect the innocent, allow humanitarian access and move away from danger,’ Barrack said in a post on X. He added that at 5 p.m. Damascus time, all parties involved agreed to a pause and cessation of fighting.

The diplomat also stressed that the next step would be a ‘complete exchange of hostages and detainees,’ a reference to the complex issue of prisoners, including several members of the Druze community, captured during recent clashes between the Syrian army and tribal militias in the region.
