A serious incident near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation food distribution centre causes dozens of casualties. Israeli forces defend their actions, while tensions rise between Palestinian factions and political accusations over arms supplies. Meanwhile, humanitarian aid continues in the Strip
About 20 people were killed and dozens were injured near a food distribution centre run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) near the Netzarim Corridor, which divides the Gaza Strip in two. Palestinian media reported the incident, while the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) denied firing to kill, claiming they fired warning shots at Palestinians who were approaching in a threatening manner.
The incident occurred a few metres from the GHF centre, a few hours before it opened. The Israeli army claims that the area was an active combat zone and that the Palestinians ignored warnings. The IDF is investigating the incident but believes that the number of casualties reported by the Palestinian media does not correspond to its own data.
In the same area, an armed Palestinian militia led by Yasser Abu Shabab killed five Hamas militants in Khan Yunis in an attack that, according to Haaretz, was supported by Israeli helicopters. Abu Shabab is known for criminal activities and looting humanitarian aid in Rafah.
Meanwhile, Israeli MP Avigdor Lieberman accused Israel of supplying weapons to criminal gangs linked to ISIS in the Strip, a move attributed to former Prime Minister Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s office responded that the state is using all necessary means to defeat Hamas.
On the humanitarian front, 62 trucks carrying food aid entered the Gaza Strip, bringing the total to 1,351 since supplies resumed on 19 May, after a hiatus since 2 March. Part of the aid is destined for distribution centres run by the GHF.
