New UK and EU sanctions against Russia: shadow fleet and financial system hit

London announces 100 new measures against Moscow’s military-industrial complex. Brussels launches 17th package with sanctions on 200 ships and countermeasures for hybrid threats

The UK and EU have announced a new wave of sanctions against Russia in an attempt to intensify pressure on Moscow and stop the war in Ukraine.

The British government announced today, Tuesday 20 May, one hundred new measures against ‘entities supporting Russia’s military machine, energy exports, cyber warfare and financial institutions involved in funding the conflict’. This was confirmed by the UK Foreign Office in an official note.

In parallel, Brussels approved the 17th sanctions package. It was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, who in a post on social media announced the blockade of almost 200 ships belonging to the so-called Russian shadow fleet, used to circumvent international restrictions on oil and gas trade.

The new European measures also target Moscow’s hybrid operations, including disinformation activities and cyber attacks, and include sanctions against entities responsible for human rights violations. ‘Further sanctions are in the pipeline. The longer Russia continues the war, the harsher our response will be,’ Kallas warned.

The UK and EU sanctions aim to weaken Russia’s military and logistical capabilities, hampering sources of conflict funding and making it more difficult to circumvent the bans already in place.
