US president threatens economic measures against Moscow and says he believes the Russian leader wants to end the conflict

Donald Trump has reiterated his belief that Vladimir Putin is willing to negotiate to end the war, but warned that the US will impose sanctions on Russia if no deal is reached.

‘I will impose sanctions if we don’t reach an agreement,’ Trump said in an interview with Fox News. ‘It would be devastating for Russia, because it’s going through a difficult time with the economy, oil prices are low.’

Despite the threats, the US president emphasised his personal relationship with the Kremlin leader. “I have a very good relationship with Putin and I think we will find an agreement. We need to meet,” he added. ‘I think Putin is tired of this whole thing, it’s not going well and he wants to get back to something else.’

Trump then hinted that he was aiming for direct negotiations to reach a quick resolution to the conflict, but with the pressure of new economic sanctions should Moscow refuse to cooperate.
