Tension between the US national security leadership is back. Mike Waltz, national security adviser to President Donald Trump, and his deputy Alex Wong have resigned, confirmed by Fox News sources. What triggered the exit was a serious miscommunication, now dubbed ‘Signalgate’.

The encrypted chat incident that rocked the Council
At the centre of the scandal was an exchange that took place on Signal, an encrypted messaging app used for confidential communications. In an internal chat, Waltz mistakenly included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic magazine. The journalist was thus able to read discussions relating to the planning of military operations against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The content of the conversation then emerged publicly, generating a political and diplomatic storm. The administration had to manage an internal crisis related to the security of the most sensitive information.

Waltz takes responsibility: ‘An embarrassing mistake’
Waltz, a former Florida congressman and decorated veteran of the Special Forces (the Green Berets), had publicly admitted the mistake in April during an interview with Fox News. He had called it an ‘embarrassing’ episode, taking full responsibility for the oversight.

Although President Trump had initially maintained a supportive stance towards him, the incident undermined confidence in the National Security Council structure.

Trump confirms purge: ‘We will continue to remove those who do not measure up’
President Donald Trump confirmed the resignation by talking about ‘necessary purges’, but downplayed the extent of the incident: ‘It’s not a lot of people,’ he explained, ‘but we need to make sure that those who remain in the White House are up to the job.
