Devastating earthquake in Myanmar: 144 dead and 732 injured, disaster feared

Myanmar hit by 7.7 magnitude quake with epicentre near Saigang. The Red Cross fears damage to dams as rescuers fight against time to save lives among the rubble

The provisional toll of the Myanmar earthquake has risen to 144 dead and 732 injured. The 7.7-magnitude quake, with epicentre near Saigang, was followed by another of 6.4 shortly afterwards. A catastrophe of even greater proportions is feared, with thousands of victims. Numerous historic structures collapsed, including an iron bridge in Mandalay and a school in Taungoo, where some 20 children were trapped.

The earthquake also had devastating effects in neighbouring countries, such as China and Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok collapsed, leaving dozens of people missing. The ruling military junta in Myanmar has appealed to the international community for humanitarian assistance, underlining the gravity of the situation in a country already ravaged by poverty and conflict.
