Vatican reassures on condition of pontiff hospitalized for bilateral pneumonia, but caution remains high. Prognosis reserved
Pope Francis “rested well all night,” as announced by the Vatican in its usual morning update on his health condition. The pontiff has been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital since Feb. 14 due to bilateral pneumonia.
According to the latest medical bulletin released Sunday evening, the Holy Father’s condition remains stable. The Pope did not require mechanical ventilation, but was treated with high-flow oxygen therapy. The Vatican confirms that Francis is apyretic, but the prognosis remains reserved due to the complexity of the clinical picture and the risk of possible new crises.
Despite the caution, Vatican sources report that there have been no further complications since Friday’s crisis. Yesterday, the Pope received Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, and Monsignor Pena Parrà, substitute. During the day, the Pontiff attended Mass with the staff taking care of him and alternated moments of rest with moments of prayer.
