The actor, winner of two Academy Awards, was found lifeless with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The cause of death is still unknown

Gene Hackman, celebrated U.S. actor and two-time Academy Award winner, was found dead at his residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, along with his wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa, 63. Santa Fe County police confirmed the discovery of the bodies on Wednesday, but the cause of death has not been made public. No foul play is suspected, and authorities are conducting a preliminary investigation, pending a search warrant, county Sheriff Adan Mendoza said.

Born Jan. 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California, Hackman was one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, with a career that spanned more than five decades. He won his first Oscar in 1972 as best actor in a leading role for his performance in William Friedkin’s “The Violent Arm of the Law,” followed by his second award in 1993 as best supporting actor for his role in Clint Eastwood’s “The Merciless Ones.” In 1989, Hackman also received the Silver Bear for best actor at the Berlin Film Festival for his performance in Alan Parker’s “Mississippi burn – The Roots of Hate.” His career was marked by numerous other awards, including four Golden Globes and two Baftas.

Hackman was known for his ability to bring complex and sometimes disturbing characters to life, characterized by intense and instinctive acting. His physicality, particularly suited to action roles, and his piercing gaze, which expressed a rich and varied emotional range, made him one of the most appreciated and respected actors on the international film scene. Despite his retirement from the stage in 2004, his legacy remains indelible in the film world.
