Salwan Momika, the Iraqi refugee who publicly burned the Koran in 2023, was shot dead in a Stockholm suburb. The Swedish police confirmed that the murder took place last night and launched an investigation.

Momika, of Christian faith, had become notorious for setting fire to the holy book of Islam, provoking a strong international reaction with protests in several Muslim countries. Just today, the Stockholm court was due to rule on the charge of inciting ethnic hatred against him.

According to the Swedish police statement, officers were called to a building in Södertälje, where Momika lived, and found him shot. The man was taken to hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead. Several local media report that the murder may have been filmed live on social media, a circumstance that investigators are verifying.
