Gaza after the war: Palestinian National Authority wants to be the only governing power
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa reiterated that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) should be the sole legitimate governing power in Gaza once the war is over
During a conference in Norway, Mustafa insisted on the need for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach the coastal enclave, where more than two million Palestinians are experiencing a severe crisis after months of bombardment. The Prime Minister stressed that it is not acceptable for any entity other than the PNA to take control of Gaza, warning that there should be no attempts to separate Gaza from the West Bank as part of the creation of a Palestinian state.
In his speech, Mustafa reiterated that the PNA government is the only one with the legitimacy to rule Gaza once the fighting ends, adding that any other attempt at control would be unacceptable to the Palestinian cause. He also hoped that the international community would continue to press for a ceasefire that would allow the people of Gaza to receive assistance and emerge from the suffering caused by the conflict.
The background to the ceasefire negotiations and the issue of Gaza’s government
The question of who should govern Gaza after the end of the war is one of the most complex in the ongoing negotiations. The conflict has strained relations between the Palestinian factions and between them and Israel, and the future of Gaza is one of the thorniest issues to be resolved. Despite the difficulties, the Palestinian National Authority, based in the West Bank, continues to claim its role as the legitimate leader for the entire Palestinian territory, including Gaza.
In parallel, negotiations also focus on a prisoner exchange, with the approximately 200 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza that could be freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. However, the issue of post-conflict governance remains one of the most contentious topics, with different factions trying to influence the future of the region.
The impasse in the international community
Meanwhile, the international community continues to monitor the situation, but external involvement is still limited. The United Nations (UN) and other international institutions have called for a ceasefire and a lasting political solution, but developments on the ground depend on the dynamics between the main factions involved in the conflict.
Expectations for a lasting peace are still far off, but Mustafa’s call for unified Palestinian leadership is a central position for the PNA to reassert its leadership role in the political landscape of Palestine.
