Trump doesn’t back down on Pete Hegseth at Pentagon

Former Fox News anchor at centre of controversy over past allegations, but president-elect reassures: ‘He’s fine’

US President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to nominate former Fox News anchor Pete Hegseth as the next Secretary of Defence. In an interview with NBC News, Trump addressed the controversy surrounding Hegseth’s nomination, including a history of alcohol abuse and sexual assault allegations.

‘I understand that people were concerned about the news that was circulating, but it looks like Pete is fine now,’ Trump said, defending the candidate as a young, bright figure who is passionate about military issues. ‘He went to Princeton and Harvard, he was a good student and he loves the military. I think people are starting to understand that,’ he added.

Trump pointed out that he has known Hegseth for a long time through his dealings with Fox News and appreciates his enthusiasm for defence issues. On Senate support for the nomination, the president-elect said several senators had expressed their support.

The allegations against Hegseth, which include alleged problems with alcohol, do not appear to be an obstacle for Trump. ‘I’ve talked to people who know him well, and they’ve told me he doesn’t have a problem with alcohol,’ he assured, trying to downplay the concerns.

Despite the criticism, Hegseth’s appointment highlights Trump’s willingness to rely on figures close to his circle and with strong positions on military matters, in line with his vision for the Pentagon.
