Pyongyang: “US-South Korea exercises are a military provocation”

North Korea threatens countermeasures during Ulchi Freedom Shield maneuvers

North Korea has described the joint exercises that the United States and South Korea will hold from August 18 to 28 as part of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield maneuvers as “a direct military provocation.” According to Defense Minister No Kwang Chol, these are “war exercises” that pose a “real threat” to the security of the peninsula.

No Kwang Chol’s warning
In a statement released by the official KCNA news agency, the minister condemned the “provocative moves” of Washington and Seoul, accusing them of pursuing a policy of “military confrontation.” Pyongyang claims the “sovereign right” to self-defense and warns that the exercises will have a “boomerang effect” with possible negative consequences for regional stability.

Threats of military response
The North Korean regime has announced that, in the event of provocation, its armed forces will respond with “resolute and determined countermeasures” in line with its right to self-defense.
