Al-Sharaa calls for national unity and peace, but violence between security forces and Alawite militias continues

More than a thousand people, including 745 civilians, were killed in clashes between Syrian security forces and Alawite militias loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad in the Latakia region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. According to the London-based NGO, many civilians were summarily executed. Casualties also include 125 dead among government forces and 148 among Assad loyalists.

The clashes, which began last Thursday with a large-scale ambush in Jableh by Alawite militias, are the most violent since the fall of Assad and involve Syrian forces led by Hayat Tahir al-Sham.

Acting President Ahmed al-Sharaa appealed for national unity and peace, stating that the country must do everything to maintain cohesion. However, he explained that the summary executions are ‘individual actions’, uncoordinated with regular security forces, amidst growing confusion among armed groups that are not officially framed.

Testimonies from local residents describe a desperate situation: corpses stacked in the streets, families exterminated and towns without electricity and water.
