Devastating fires in South Korea: at least 19 dead and thousands evacuated

South Korea’s southeast devastated by unprecedented forest fires. Power lines disrupted and thousands displaced

One of the worst forest fires in South Korea’s history has killed at least 19 people and forced some 27,000 residents to flee their homes. Acting President Han Duck-soo described the incident as a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions, with fires continuing to cause chaos overnight. Power and communication lines were disrupted in several areas, and many roads were blocked.

Seoul’s Ministry of Interior said that 17,398 hectares of land were destroyed by the flames, 87% of it in Uiseong County, one of the worst affected areas. The government has raised the alert level to the maximum and transferred thousands of inmates from local prisons for safety reasons.

Rescue operations continue as the authorities struggle to contain the damage and ensure the safety of people in the areas affected by the fires.
