Israel does not withdraw completely from Lebanon: 5 strategic points remain under IDF control
The Israeli army withdraws from southern Lebanon, but retains control over five strategic areas. The deployment of Lebanese forces is ongoing
Contrary to the ceasefire agreement reached with Hezbollah, the Israeli army is not withdrawing completely from southern Lebanon. Lebanese security sources confirmed that the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) left all population centres along the border, but retained control over five strategic points, as stated yesterday. The partial withdrawal comes after the expiry of the deadline set in the ceasefire agreement.
Lebanese forces, meanwhile, deployed overnight in several locations in southern Lebanon, including Aabbasiyyeh, Majidieh, Kafr Kila, Marjaayoun, and other towns near the border with Israel. The Lebanese army specified that the deployment was carried out in coordination with the US-led international committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire. Operations include surveying roads and removing unexploded ordnance left on the ground.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the IDF will remain in five strategic positions in southern Lebanon, thus maintaining a buffer zone along the border. Katz stressed that the Israeli forces will act decisively to ensure compliance with the ceasefire agreement and will respond forcefully to any threat from Hezbollah. ‘The Israel Defense Forces will not tolerate violations by Hezbollah and will respond decisively,’ the minister said, as reported by the Times of Israel.
