US president-elect continues to cultivate international relations as Trudeau steps down. Greenland remains a key target

Donald Trump, President-elect of the United States, less than two weeks after his inauguration ceremony, is continuing his international journey with a series of targeted initiatives and statements. These include courting Canada, culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and sending his son Donald Trump Jr. to Greenland, a territory that Trump has already tried to acquire in the past.

As the US Congress certifies his election victory, Trump is watching Trudeau’s exit, who announced his resignation to allow the Liberal party to find a new leader for the next election. According to Trump, Trudeau’s resignation would be a consequence of the ‘tariff war’ between Canada and the United States, where threats of heavy American tariffs would put the Canadian economy in crisis. Trump reiterated his view that many Canadians ‘would like to be the 51st state’ of the US, and again expressed the benefits the country would gain from uniting with the US, including security and lower taxes.

Meanwhile, Trump’s attention also shifts to Greenland, a strategic territory in the Arctic that the president-elect would like to acquire. In this regard, Donald Trump Jr. is planning a visit to the island, attracting the attention of the Danish authorities, who have reiterated that this is not an official visit. Greenland, rich in mineral resources and located in a key geopolitical position, continues to be a US target for reasons of national security and natural resources. However, the island has already responded in 2019 that it is not for sale, reiterating its autonomy and resistance to such takeover attempts.
