U.S. Congress summons former Manhattan jail guard over searches and cash deposits

Epstein case, suspicions on guard Tova Noel before death. The U.S. Congress has summoned Tova Noel, a former correctional officer at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, who was among the last guards to see Jeffrey Epstein alive on the evening before his death on August 10, 2019.

Lawmakers are focusing on a series of actions considered unusual. These include a $5,000 cash deposit made days before Epstein’s death and online searches about the financier conducted from a computer linked to Noel shortly before his body was found in his cell.

The autopsy carried out by medical examiner Kristin Roman concluded that Epstein, 66, died by suicide. However, some have questioned that finding, pointing to his connections with powerful figures allegedly linked to his sex trafficking network.

According to U.S. Department of Justice records, at 5:42 a.m. on August 10, 2019, a Google search was made using the phrase “latest news on Epstein in jail.” The same query was repeated about ten minutes later. When questioned in 2021 by the Office of Inspector General, Noel said she did not recall the searches and expressed surprise they had been conducted on her computer.

Investigators are also examining her banking activity. Representative James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky and chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, said he intends to question Noel about 12 cash deposits made between April 2018 and July 30, 2019. The last deposit amounted to $5,000, according to bank records.

In November 2019, the bank flagged the 12 deposits to the FBI as suspicious activity. The purpose of those transactions has not been clarified. Comer stated that Noel is not accused of wrongdoing but emphasized that several questions remain regarding the circumstances of Epstein’s death. If she fails to appear, she could be subpoenaed.

Noel had previously told investigators she believed Epstein died by suicide.
