Friendly fire incident in the Red Sea: US jet fighter hit by USS Gettysburg cruiser
The incident is not related to enemy fire. Investigation underway, minor injuries to one of the pilots recovered
A US F/A-18 fighter jet flying over the Red Sea was hit in what appears to be a case of friendly fire, according to the US Central Command (Centcom). The incident involved the missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which mistakenly hit the aircraft during a patrol mission related to security operations in the region in response to Houthi attacks.
The pilots and their condition
Both pilots of the fighter jet were promptly recovered, with one of them suffering only minor injuries. Centcom clarified that the incident was not caused by an enemy attack and that an investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of what happened.
An operational error
According to initial assessments, the cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly fired at and hit the F/A-18, which had taken off from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, one of the main US naval assets currently deployed on the international patrol mission in the Red Sea.
