Trump must pay Jean Carroll after defamation case linked to sexual assault allegations

A federal appeals court has confirmed today that Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million for defaming Jean Carroll, the woman who accused him of raping her in a New York department store dressing room in the 1990s. The judges ruled that the Supreme Court’s decision granting Trump presidential immunity does not apply to Carroll’s civil defamation lawsuit.

Background of the case

After going public with her accusations in 2019, Carroll faced attacks and insults from Trump in public statements and on social media. The defamation case stems from these remarks, which Carroll claimed damaged her reputation.

Related proceedings

In a separate trial related to the same events, Trump was found liable for sexual abuse against Carroll, further supporting the damages awarded in the defamation case.
