Diplomatic clash after more than 100 NGOs raise the alarm about famine. Paris points the finger at the Israeli blockade, but Tel Aviv rejects the accusations and shifts the blame onto the militants

Paris and Tel Aviv exchange barbs over the serious humanitarian emergency affecting the Gaza Strip. The French Foreign Ministry has openly accused Israel, arguing that the risk of famine in the region is ‘a direct result of the blockade imposed’ by Tel Aviv.

The Israeli government’s response was swift. Official spokesperson David Mencer rejected all accusations, stating: “There is no famine in Gaza today caused by Israel. There is an artificial shortage, engineered by Hamas”. According to Mencer, Palestinian militants are preventing the regular distribution of food aid, even going so far as to loot it.

The controversy comes after more than 100 humanitarian and human rights organisations sounded the alarm, denouncing a ‘mass famine’ in Gaza and urgently calling on Israel to unblock the flow of aid. The international debate is heating up, while the situation on the ground continues to worsen.
