Wheelchair-bound Pope Francis makes surprise appearance at Jubilee of the Sick in St. Peter’s Square: words of hope and comfort for those suffering

On April 6, Pope Francis surprised the faithful with a special participation in the Jubilee of the Sick in St. Peter’s Square. Despite his health condition, the pontiff, accompanied by nurse Massimiliano Strappetti and with the aid of a wheelchair, took part in the Mass and the final blessing. Wearing oxygen nose pads, Francis spoke a few but meaningful words of closeness.

Illness and human frailty

In his message, read by Msgr. Rino Fisichella, Pope Francis reflected on the theme of illness, describing it as one of life’s harshest experiences that highlights the fragility of human beings. “Illness can make us feel like a people in exile, without hope for the future,” Bergoglio wrote. However, the Pope reiterated that God never abandons His children: “If we abandon ourselves to Him, precisely in moments of difficulty, we can experience the consolation of His presence.”

A message of hope and compassion

The Pontiff stressed that God, made man, wanted to share our weakness and knows well what it means to suffer. He urged the faithful to see in pain an opportunity to encounter the divine presence: “In His trusting love, He involves us so that we can become messengers of His presence, transforming the bed of a sick person into a ‘holy place’ of salvation and redemption.”

A call to support those working in healthcare

In his message, Pope Francis also prayed for all those who work in health care: doctors, nurses and health care workers, who are often forced to work in difficult conditions and sometimes victims of aggression. The Pope asked them to support and respect their mission, which is fundamental for the good of all.
