Trump orders, Hegseth executes: 400 books removed from Us Naval Academy library

The measure covers content related to diversity, equity and inclusion and is part of the Trump administration’s campaign to remove such programmes from federal agencies

The Pentagon has ordered the Us Naval Academy to remove nearly 400 books from its library as part of a decision to remove content related to diversity, equity and inclusion (Dei). The measure, ordered by the office of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, is part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to remove Dei programmes from federal agencies. The term ‘Dei programmes’ refers to initiatives designed to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within organisations and institutions. In the United States, such programmes have been introduced since the 1960s to address racial discrimination and promote equality.

According to US sources, the order to examine the library came last week. An initial search had led to the identification of about 900 books to be reviewed, but in the end about 400 titles were chosen for removal. The operation was completed quickly, just in time for the arrival of Hegseth, who was to visit the Naval Academy the following day. The visit was already scheduled and had no direct connection with the removal of the books. At the moment, a list of the removed titles has not been made public.
