US president backs new sanctions against Moscow to force a peace with Ukraine. Bipartisan senators push for punitive measures on trade and energy

The United States is preparing to enact 500 percent tariffs on goods imported by countries that buy energy products from Russia and new sanctions to target the shadow fleet of oil tankers exporting Russian crude beyond the G7-imposed cap. The plan, promoted by a bipartisan group of senators and congressmen, aims to pressure Moscow to accept a lasting peace with Ukraine, as urged by Donald Trump.

Frustration is growing in the White House over the Kremlin’s alleged slowdown in negotiations. The bill, already signed by 50 senators, was introduced by Lindsey Graham (Republican) and Richard Blumenthal (Democrat), with a similar version in the House.

“The negotiations in Saudi Arabia have shown how Moscow seeks the lifting of sanctions before seriously discussing the ceasefire,” the signatories point out.
