Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede denounces Usha Vance’s planned visit as an act of US power over Greenland, further aggravating diplomatic relations with the US

The planned visit of US officials to Greenland, and Usha Vance, wife of the US Vice President, has triggered a wave of controversy. According to Greenland Prime Minister Mute B. Egede, this visit is considered a ‘highly aggressive’ act on the part of the US and threatens to further precipitate the already strained relations between the two nations.

The shadow of Trump’s annexation
Tensions between the US and Greenland originated when President Donald Trump expressed his intention to annex the Danish autonomous territory. Despite international criticism and Greenland’s outright rejection, Trump recently revived this proposal, stating that annexation would be crucial for international security.

Prime Minister Egede, in an interview with the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, harshly criticised the US delegation’s visit, pointing out that the presence of a senior official like National Security Advisor Mike Waltz can only increase US political and military pressure on Greenland. ‘Their presence has no other purpose than to demonstrate power over us,’ Egede commented.

The Greenlandic reaction
The Greenlandic government has repeatedly stated that it wants to be neither American nor Danish, emphasising its autonomous identity. Mute Egede was adamant in his rejection of any possibility of selling or annexing the territory, pointing out that the Greenlandic people have already voted against immediate independence from Denmark and have no intention of joining the United States.

‘We are not for sale,’ Egede said in a social post, adding that the US should respect Greenlandic sovereignty. Usha Vance’s visit, officially organised to celebrate Greenland’s culture and unity during a traditional dog sledding event, was seen by locals as a veiled attempt to influence geopolitical relations in favour of the US.

Trump insists on annexation
In the context of rising tensions, Trump recently stated during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that the annexation of Greenland ‘will be important not only for our security, but also for international security’. Trump also announced the purchase of 48 icebreakers as part of a strategy to strengthen the American presence in the Arctic region, emphasising that Denmark is unable to protect the territory.

These statements caused outrage in Copenhagen. The chairman of the Danish Defence Committee, Rasmus Jarlov, criticised the US position and Rutte’s lack of firm opposition. Jarlov also reiterated that Greenland, although part of the Kingdom of Denmark, does not wish to be annexed by the United States.
