Pope Francis: worsening respiratory picture, prognosis reserved

The Holy Father had an isolated respiratory crisis. Holy See monitors condition

Today, Feb. 28, Pope Francis suffered a “sudden worsening of the respiratory picture,” according to a Vatican statement. In the afternoon, the pontiff experienced an “isolated crisis of bronchospasm and vomiting” after spending the morning alternating respiratory physiotherapy with prayer in the private chapel. The medical bulletin specifies that “the prognosis remains reserved,” and the next 24-48 hours will be crucial in understanding the evolution of his state of health.

Immediate intervention and response to treatment

Despite the severity of the episode, Pope Francis promptly underwent bronchoaspiration and began noninvasive mechanical ventilation. The medical bulletin points out that the Holy Father responded well to the treatment, improving gas exchange, and remained alert and cooperative during the therapeutic maneuvers. The situation, however, remains delicate and under close observation.

Prognosis reserved, expected in the coming hours

The Pontiff’s condition remains uncertain, and the Vatican reported that it will be necessary to wait the next 24-48 hours to assess how the situation will evolve. In the morning, Pope Francis received the Eucharist, a sign of his spiritual devotion despite his physical difficulties.
