The crash at Reagan Airport, the passenger aircraft crashed into the Potomac River
An American Airlines plane with 64 people on board collided with a US Army Black Hawk military helicopter while it was landing at Washington’s Reagan Airport. After the impact, the passenger aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, breaking into several parts, while the helicopter was found upside down in water up to 8 metres deep.
According to the Washington Post, there were three soldiers on board the Black Hawk, while the police have already recovered 18 bodies, with no survivors reported yet. The search continues with the support of Maryland State Police divers, coordinated by Governor Wes Moore.
The FBI has ruled out the possibility of terrorism, as well as that of a criminal act, while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered the closure of Reagan Airport, with flights diverted to Marshall Airport in Baltimore-Washington.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that the priority was to rescue the people involved. At the time of the accident, weather conditions were good, but the causes of the crash remain to be clarified.
