North Korea launches new short-range ballistic missiles, triggering concerns in South Korea, Japan and the US. The tests come as tensions rise in the region
North Korea has carried out a new short-range ballistic missile launch, fuelling regional concerns. According to the South Korean military, the missiles were launched around 9.30 a.m. local time from the Ganggye area, with trajectory towards the Sea of Japan. The Yonhap news agency reports that although the exact number of missiles was not specified, they covered a distance of about 250 kilometres before falling into the sea.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff condemned the action as a ‘blatant provocation’, highlighting the threat it poses to peace and stability in the area. The South Korean military has intensified its monitoring of the situation, working with the US and Japan to share information and prepare for any further launches.
This episode comes on top of the recent statement on 6 January, when Pyongyang announced the successful test of a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile, thus increasing diplomatic tensions in the region.
